Helicopter Safety Standards

ALWAYS APPROACH FROM THE CAUTION ZONE

NEVER FROM THE DANGER ZONE !

Safety standards should be the same, whether the helicopter’s engines are running or shut down. To insure the safest operation, good habits should be established for working with the helicopter:

1. DO NOT approach the helicopter after landing, the air-medical crew will approach you when they are ready and free to do so.

2. Remain clear of the helicopter unless an air-medical crew member is with you.

3. When approaching the aircraft, always approach and depart the area from the front of the aircraft, where you are in the view of the pilot. NEVER approach or depart to the rear of the aircraft. (DANGER ZONE)

4. When approaching the aircraft on a slope, NEVER approach from the uphill side. Always approach from the downhill side, because the rotor clearance is greater.

5. NEVER walk near the tail rotor. (DANGER ZONE)

6. Unauthorized personnel should be kept from the landing area.

7. NO SMOKING near the aircraft.

8. No vehicular traffic near the aircraft.

9. No I.V.’s or other objects should be carried above your head.

10. Never use flash bulbs when the aircraft is landing or taking-off. NEVER shine a white light directly towards the aircraft, for this can blind the pilot.

11. The LZ Officer should guard the furequncey used to land the helicopter at all times. The pilot may require important information, or requires you to STOP someone from entering the LZ.
